Reflections on CoLIS 2025

The end of May and start of June is always a busy time for conferences and this year has been no exception. Luckily, at the start of June, I was able to attend the International Conference on Concepts of Library and Information Science (CoLIS). CoLIS is a series of international conferences aiming to provide a broad forum for the exploration and exchange of ideas in the field of Library and Information Science, Information Studies, and related disciplines. The events took place in Glasgow and were hosted by the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Strathclyde, which rather neatly was where I studied for my MSc in Information and Library Studies, as well as my PhD. Proceedings included a civic reception at Glasgow City Chambers and a dinner and ceilidh at Oran Mor.

I was grateful to be able present findings from my PhD, where I discussed the wellbeing benefits observed amongst hikers on the West Highland Way and how they can be linked to concepts in information science, receiving thoughtful feedback and questions from expert researchers. I was also very fortunate to help facilitate a workshop on embodied information alongside Jenna Hartel (University of Toronto) and Laura Williams (University of Sheffield), and wonderfully led by Shannon Crawford Barniskis (University of Kentucky). This event featured everything from amateur (well certainly from me) dramatics, olfactory surprises (pleasant ones, in the form of essential oils), stretching exercises, vlogs about running, music playlist creation and more besides, highlighting in a short space of time the wealth of directions that future research on embodied information can take.

The three keynote speeches were highlights of the conference and covered a wide range of concepts in Library and Information Science. Firstly, Jenna Hartel used Marcia Bates’ concept of the red thread of information to weave a fascinating, though-provoking picture of how consideration of the serious leisure perspective, the study of hobbies, interests and activities that people devote a great deal of their life to, can continue to generate new insight into information behaviour, symbiotically creating innovative research methodologies and novel ways to teach concepts in Library and Information Science. Their talk also showcased their skill as researcher and as a teacher, using multimedia elements to relate key concepts and meaningfully engage with their audience.

On the second day of the conference, Dr Adele Patrick gave a very inspiring talk about the history and present-day activities of the Glasgow Women’s Library. I greatly appreciated the way they described the care they gave to people in the library’s physical space and how it was experienced by visitors, this seemed to be of equal importance as the contents of the collection. This perfectly illustrates how the consideration of people’s bodies in library and other information spaces, is vital to making collections accessible, as well as being a practical example of how embodied information is not just an academic concept, but something that should be central to the provision of library services. I was also struck by how large institutions, such as national or university libraries, can learn from the best practice of independent organisations, where values and approaches are developed from grass-roots upwards.

The final keynote was given by Dr Toma Tasovac, Director of the Belgrade Center for Digital Humanities (BCDH) and Director of the pan-European Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH-EU), who took the opportunity to question whether libraries are still “imprisoned by the print mind”. This talk really resonated with me in my role in the Research Data Support team as it raised fascinating issues and concepts around whether library collections themselves are data, as well as what can be considered supporting digital data in the arts and humanities. I find the latter in particular to be an area of great interest, that there could be a wealth of supporting material for arts and humanities research that doesn’t get captured digitally because researchers think that data just means spreadsheets. Finding ways to advocate for the inclusion of novel research outputs, less commonly encountered types of data, is a means to promote a greater understanding of the value of researcher’s work in totality, rather than just by the metrics of publishing, and can help create archives that will be of significant cultural value as time progresses.

I also greatly enjoyed attending two of the conference’s alternative events on Information Art, organised by Andrea Kampen (University of British Columbia) and Rebecca Noone (University of Glasgow), and on information practices during transitional, life-changing events, facilitated by Jenny Bronstein (Tel Aviv University), Perla Innocenti (University of Strathclyde) and Jette Seiden Hyldegård (University of Copenhagen). Both had in common creative ways to encourage participants to engage with the concepts, from creating art using collage techniques to mapping from memory. These creative and collaborative activities were a refreshing way to engage the brain in a different way in between the many fascinating presentations.

It is hard to narrow down all the interesting talks I heard, but I would like to at least briefly mention the following, in no particular order: Genre knowledge: a metacognitive approach to exploring document practices in science by Samuel Dodson; The knowledge organisation of sub-subgenres: the curious case of the collaborative works of Gilbert and Sullivan by Deborah Lee (University College London); Geographical information ranges: conceptualising holistic information landscapes by Kaitlin Montague (Humboldt University); Reciprocity in information exchange: how social exchange enriches collaborative research partnerships by Joann Cattlin (RMIT University) and Lisa Given (RMIT University); Informational self-deception: deconstruction and reconstruction within philosophy of information by Juliana Mestre (Rutgers University); ‘It’s a wide cluster of noise’: experiencing and describing information from environmental sounds by Owen Stewart-Robertson (McGill University); and The multispecies perspective in library and information science by Niloofar Solhjoo (Charles Sturt University). I haven’t even touched on the wonderful posters I saw, but in the interest of some attempt at brevity, I will stop here. I encourage you to look at the proceedings online.

DataShare spotlight: History, Classics and Archaeology in DataShare

To celebrate World Digital Preservation Day 2024, this is the first in a series of occasional blog posts which seek to shine a light on some interesting examples of datasets uploaded to DataShare, the University of Edinburgh’s open access data repository.

Research data that is deposited in DataShare comes from across the Colleges and Schools and can relate to cutting-edge scientific research or exploration of under-studied social worlds, however, we also receive valuable historical research data too!

A prime example of this is an item submitted by Professor Charles West, who is based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology, titled “Autun List of Local Churches, c. 1000”. As neatly described in the title, it contains a list of 144 churches in the diocese of Autun, France, which was made around the year 1000. An example of one of the churches, the Church of Saint Martin in Cordesse, can be seen in the photo below.

According to the item’s description: “The dataset provides the names in the list, the modern place-names, the departement these places are located in, their order in the original list, whether each church is attested in earlier documentation or not, and if so, approximately when.”

The item took on a new life when it was shared on Twitter (now known as X), where a user, William J.B. Mattingly, took the dataset and added latitudinal and longitudinal data to create a mapped visualisation shown in a video. This reuse is documented in the Altmetrics of the item, which details how a DataShare item has been shared or cited. It is also a neat demonstration of how data shared on DataShare can be reused in useful and creative ways!

Reflections on Repository Fringe 2017

The following is a guest post by Mick Eadie, Research Information Management Officer at University of Glasgow, on his impressions of Repository Fringe 2017.

The first day afternoon 10×10 (lightning talk) sessions had many of the presentations on Research Data topics.  We heard talks about repositories in the arts; evolving research data policy at national and pan-national level; and archival storage and integrations between research data repositories and other systems like Archivematica, EPrints and Pure.

Repositories and their use in managing research data in the arts was kicked off with Nicola Siminson from the Glasgow School of Art with her talk on What RADAR did next: developing a peer review process for research plans.  Nicola explained how EPrints has been developed to maximise the value of research data content at GSA by making it more visually appealing and better able to deal with a multitude of non-text based objects and artefacts.   She then outlined GSA’s recently developed Annual Research Planning (ARP) tool which is an EPrints add-on that allows the researcher to provide information on their current and planned research activities and potential impact.

GSA have built on this functionality to enable the peer-reviewing of ARPs, which means they can be shared and commented on by others.   This has led to significant uptake in the use of the repository by researchers as they are keen to keep their research profile up-to-date, which has in turn raised the repository profile and increased data deposits.  There are also likely to be cost-benefits to the institution by using an existing system to help to manage research information as well as outputs, as it keeps content accessible from one place and means the School doesn’t need to procure separate systems.

On Policy

We heard from Martin Donnelly from the DCC on National Open Data and Open Science Policies in Europe.  Martin talked about the work done by the DCC and SPARC Europe in assessing policies from across Europe to assess the methodologies used by countries and funders to promote the concept of Open Data across the continent.   They found some interesting variants across countries: some funder driven, others more national directives, plans and roadmaps.  It was interesting to see how a consensus was emerging around best practice and how the EU through its Horizon 2020 Open Research Data Pilot seemed to be emerging as a driver for increased take up and action.

Storage, Preservation and Integration

No research data day would be complete without discussing archival storage and preservation.  Pauline Ward from Edinburgh University gave us an update on Edinburgh DataVault: Local implementation of Jisc DataVault: the value of testing. She highlighted the initial work done at national level by Jisc and the research data Spring project, and went on to discuss the University of Edinburgh’s local version of Data Vault which integrates with their CRIS system (Pure) – allowing a once only upload of the data which links to metadata in the CRIS and creates an archival version of the data.  Pauline also hinted at future integration with DropBox which will be interesting to see develop.

Alan Morrison from the University of Strathclyde continued on the systems integration and preservation theme by giving as assessment of Data Management & Preservation using PURE and Archivematica. He gave us the background to Strathclyde’s systems and workflows between Pure and Archivematica, highlighting some interesting challenges in dealing with file-formats in the STEM subjects which are often proprietary and non-standard.

Data Visualisation with D3 workshop

Last week I attended the 4th HSS Digital Day of Ideas 2015. Amongst networking and some interesting presentations on the use of digital technologies in humanities research (the two presentations I attended focused on analysis and visualisation of historical records), I attended the hands-on `Data Visualisation with D3′ workshop run by Uta Hinrichs, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The workshop was a crash course to start visualising data combining d3.js and leaflet.js libraries, with HTML, SVG, and CSS. For this, we needed to have installed a text editor (e.g. Notepad++, TextWrangler) and a server environment for local development (e.g. WAMP, MAMP). With the software installed beforehand, I was ready to script as soon as I got there. We were recommended to use Chrome (or Safari), for it seems to work best for JavaScript, and the developer tools it offers are pretty good.

First, we started with the basics of how the d3.js library and other JavaScript libraries, such as jquery or leaflet, are incorporated into basic HTML pages. D3 is an open source library developed by Mike Bostocks. All the ‘visualisation magic’ happens in the browser, which takes the HTML file and processes the scripts as displayed in the console. The data used in the visualisation is pulled into the console, thus you cannot hide the data.

For this visualisation (D3 Visual Elements), the browser uses the content of the HTML file to call the d3.js library and the data into the console. In this example, the HTML contains a bit of CSS and SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) element with a d3.js script which pulls data from a CSV file containing the details: author and number of books. The visualisation displays the authors’ names and bars representing the number of books each author has written. The bars change colour and display the number of books when you hover over.

The second visualisation we worked on was the combination of geo-referenced data and leaflet.js library. Here, we combine the d3.js and leaflet.js libraries to display geographic data from a CSV file. First we ensured the OpenStreetMap loaded, then pulled the CSV data in and last customised the map using a different map tile. We also added data points to the map and pop-up tags.

In this 2-hour workshop, Uta Hinrichs managed to give a flavour of the possibilities that JavaScript libraries offer and how ‘relatively easy’ it is to visualise data online.
